5 Signs of Drug Addiction
The beginning signs of drug addiction are often noticeable by friends and loved ones. However, users will attempt to conceal these signs by explain their unusual behavior as not feeling well, or as being tired. As the addiction progresses, these signs will become more and more noticeable – especially to someone who knows what to look for. If you recognize some of the symptoms listed below, you may want to seek help.
Sign #1: Cravings and Relapse
Initial signs of addiction will result in intense cravings. Cravings will include depression, elevated anxiety levels, difficulty focusing or concentrating, and mood swings. The user will often make promises to stop using; however, these promises are quickly abandoned when the user is faced with the reality of actually quitting. Many addicts believe they can stop using whenever they like. This is an illusion projected by the user to rationalize their behavior.
Sign #2: Increased Drug Tolerance
As the user’s body becomes familiar with the drug, the dosages will increase in volume and in frequency. In other words, the user will take larger doses, more often, in an attempt to maintain the “high” feeling. During this period, signs of addiction will be noticed by changes in mood, eating habits, weight, and personality. The user will continue to make excuses for their behavior; however, loved ones will usually know something is seriously wrong at this point.
Sign #3: Dangerous Behavior
The "high" users experience will often make them feel invincible. The user will feel confident in doing things they would never do while they were sober. Prolonged signs of addiction may be noticed as: possessing drug paraphernalia, selling drugs, stealing, having unprotected sex, sharing needles, incarceration, and hospitalization. Users will continue this behavior while their jobs, education, and physical health are compromised.
Sign #4: Loss of Memory and Motivation
The most important thing to an addict is their drugs. Personal goals, hobbies, and relationships, are all abandoned in the continued pursuit of more drugs. During these signs of addiction, addicts become completely unengaged in life. The addict will lose all ambition to lead a productive life.
Sign #5: Withdrawal Symptoms
Anytime the user’s body is without the drug, the withdrawal symptoms of drug detoxification will begin to take "effect" almost immediately. The withdrawal signs of addiction will vary depending on the drug being abused. However, during withdrawal, almost all addicts will become restless, resentful and highly defensive during these periods. You may also observe: fatigue, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, chills, cramps, shakes, sweats, seizures and even psychotic behavior.
